Biography

The 1975 is a British indie pop and alternative rock band formed in 2002 in Wilmslow, Cheshire, establishing themselves as one of the most influential groups in contemporary indie music. The band consists of Matty Healy (vocals, guitar), Adam Hann (guitar), Ross MacDonald (bass) and George Daniel (drums), who met in secondary school and began playing together under different names before settling as The 1975 in 2012. Their name comes from a notation found in a Jack Kerouac poetry book dated "June 1, The 1975", reflecting their artistic aesthetic and connection to literary culture. The 1975 gained international recognition with their self-titled debut album "The 1975" in 2013, which included hits like "Chocolate", "Sex" and "Robbers", establishing their characteristic sound that combines elements of indie rock, synth-pop and introspective lyrics. The album reached number one on British charts and established the band as an emerging force in alternative music. Their second album, "I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It" (2016), expanded their sonic palette by incorporating elements of R&B, gospel and ambient music, demonstrating their ability to evolve and experiment with different genres while maintaining their distinctive identity. The album included hits like "The Sound", "Somebody Else" and "Love Me", consolidating their commercial and critical success. "A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships" (2018) and "Notes on a Conditional Form" (2020) continued exploring contemporary themes such as technology, modern anxiety and relationships in the digital age, while experimenting with a wide range of musical styles ranging from pop to country and ambient. The 1975 has been recognized for their energetic live performances and Matty Healy's charismatic personality, who often addresses social and political issues during their concerts. The band has received multiple Brit Award nominations and won the Best British Group award in 2017 and 2019. Their influence extends beyond music, with Healy being recognized as an influential voice on gender, politics and contemporary culture issues. The 1975 continues to be one of the most relevant bands in indie music, exploring new sonic territories and maintaining their commitment to artistic authenticity and creative expression.
