About the festival

Before an old Fiat factory could hold tens of thousands of people watching Aphex Twin, Arca or Thom Yorke, Club To Club was almost literally what its name promised: a night spent moving between clubs across Turin. In 2002, a single ticket unlocked several venues and turned the journey between them into part of the event. There was no giant central hall and no polished concept of avant-pop. There was a simpler idea that proved unusually durable: nightlife communities did not have to remain sealed inside their own rooms. They could be connected, audiences could cross between them, and for one night the city itself could behave like a dancefloor. C2C Festival grew from that movement, expanding in scale without entirely abandoning the principle that culture becomes more interesting when people are encouraged to cross boundaries.

Sergio Ricciardone, Roberto Spallacci and Giorgio Valletta developed the festival within Situazione Xplosiva at a time when Turin was rethinking its relationship with contemporary culture after decades of industrial identity. Electronic music offered a particularly useful starting point because its communities were already built around circulation: between DJs, labels, clubs and cities. Jeff Mills, Laurent Garnier and Ricardo Villalobos represented different histories of techno and club culture, but C2C’s character was never determined by one school. The more important instinct was curatorial restlessness. A booking should lead somewhere else; a venue could change how music was understood; a night could be designed as a route rather than a static programme.

The physical scale changed decisively in 2007 when Lingotto became the festival’s main hub. The former Fiat complex, one of Turin’s great monuments to industrial modernity, gave Club To Club a space capable of supporting huge audiovisual productions and audiences that would never have fit inside its original clubs. Yet the move did not turn the festival into a conventional arena event. C2C continued using theatres, galleries and cultural institutions across the city. OGR Torino, added to its geography from 2017, provided another powerful setting: former railway workshops transformed into a centre for art, technology and performance. As Turin’s industrial architecture acquired new cultural lives, the festival learned to use those transformations as part of its own visual and conceptual language.

The music expanded in parallel. Electronic music gradually became less a category than a connective tissue. Kraftwerk could sit within the same history as Thom Yorke; Aphex Twin alongside Caroline Polachek; Autechre beside King Krule; Flying Lotus and Jamie xx among artists arriving from rap, R&B, ambient, jazz, experimental pop and contemporary composition. Eventually the festival adopted “avant-pop” as its most useful description. The phrase does not mean simply unusual pop music. It describes a space where club culture, experimental practice and popular forms are allowed to mutate together. One artist might build a set around the physical pressure of bass; another might work with voice, acoustic instrumentation or sound installation. What connects them is a refusal to treat existing genre boundaries as fixed.

Turin Contemporary Art Week gives this approach a context that few music festivals can reproduce. C2C does not arrive in a city that otherwise pauses around it; it appears while Turin is already dense with exhibitions, galleries, fairs, collectors, artists and cultural institutions. The festival has deliberately woven itself into that week. OGR, Teatro Regio, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Combo Torino and other locations have supported daytime talks, performances and collaborations that widen the meaning of attendance beyond the main Lingotto nights. Moving between a monumental industrial hall, a theatre and a contemporary-art institution changes the way each performance is perceived. C2C has always understood architecture as a curatorial tool rather than merely a container.

The pandemic forced that philosophy into an extreme form. In 2020, instead of pretending that a normal festival could continue online, the organisers created CØC — The Festival As A Performance. Artists produced works within Turin cultural spaces for digital transmission, treating the impossibility of gathering as an artistic condition rather than just a logistical problem. In 2021, a limited physical edition returned to venues including OGR and Fondazione Sandretto while retaining the CØC framing. These were not separate festivals. They were transitional chapters in the same history. By the time the numbered twentieth edition returned in 2022, C2C Festival had become a more accurate name than Club To Club for an organisation whose activity had expanded far beyond nightclub circulation.

The hardest transition came in 2025 with the death of founder and director Sergio Ricciardone. For more than two decades his vision had been closely identified with the festival’s appetite for discovery and international exchange. The first Turin edition without him therefore became a test of whether C2C could preserve a philosophy without simply imitating its founder’s past decisions. It drew 42,000 attendees, sold out for a fourth consecutive year and reached a record 40 percent international audience. At the same time, C2C was beginning to operate beyond Turin. Its first New York edition arrived in 2025, and the second sold out Knockdown Center in May 2026 with Arca, Avalon Emerson & the Charm, aya, Nourished By Time, Malibu and others across three indoor and outdoor stages.

The twenty-fifth anniversary from October 29 to November 1, 2026 brings all of those threads together. Arca, The Avalanches, Robyn, Kelela, Yung Lean & Bladee, Shygirl, Oklou, Theo Parrish, Grouper, Kode9 & RP Boo, Smerz, Carl Stone, ML Buch and many others form a programme where naming one dominant genre would miss the point. Lingotto will again carry the scale of Friday and Saturday nights, OGR will frame the opening and closing, and Teatro Carignano returns after eleven years. Club To Club began by connecting separate nightclubs with one ticket. Twenty-five years later, C2C connects factories, theatres, art institutions, cities and global scenes through essentially the same impulse: never assume that music has to stay where you first found it.
