Campus Festival Konstanz

Few festivals can measure their growth as literally as the distance from a university parking lot to a lakeside stadium. Campus Festival Konstanz began in the former and eventually found its current home in the latter. Today, with more than twenty thousand people moving through the Bodenseestadion and four stages shifting between rap, pop, indie and electronic music, it is easy to forget how modest the original proposition was: a student at Universität Konstanz believed the city lacked enough culture designed for people his age. That distance between origin and present remains the most interesting tension in the festival. It has become one of the significant music weekends around Lake Constance, yet it still carries “Campus” in a name that constantly points backwards.

Xhavit Hyseni was studying politics and public administration when he helped put the first edition together in 2015. This was not a project launched from a national festival office. He was involved in student representation and in the small student events organisation nachtschwärmer-kn, working with classmates and the university community. Students were even surveyed about which bands they wanted. On June 13, around 2,300 people came to the university’s Parkplatz Nord for Itchy Poopzkid, Joris, Miwata, Das Lumpenpack and local musicians. “By students for students” was then less a slogan than an accurate description. The university supplied land and practical support, while the crowd gave an academic space a temporary second identity.

The festival expanded quickly. By 2016 it had become a two-day event with Olli Schulz, Boy and Irie Révoltés; in 2017 Bosse, Die Orsons and a still-rising Giant Rooks appeared alongside poetry slam, DJs and the Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie. That breadth became a defining characteristic. Campus Festival never developed a strict musical doctrine. German indie could sit beside rap, guitars beside electronic selectors and local artists beside acts already touring nationally. Von Wegen Lisbeth, Trettmann, Moop Mama and Leoniden in 2018 were followed by RIN, Mighty Oaks, MEUTE, OK Kid and Blond in 2019. The lineups worked less as manifestos for one scene than as annual snapshots of what a young German-speaking audience was listening to.

The university setting gave those early editions a distinct physical character. Parkplatz Nord, the nearby woodland and familiar campus infrastructure made the festival feel like student life temporarily amplified to an improbable scale. That connection was broken by circumstance. The 2020 and 2021 editions were cancelled during the pandemic, while new development made the original area unsuitable for a festival that had already outgrown its first footprint. When Campus Festival finally returned in May 2022, it did so for the first time at Bodenseestadion, close to the shore of Lake Constance. The move was more than a venue change: it shifted the event from a large university gathering into one of the city’s major open-air productions.

The new site altered the way the weekend is experienced. Four stages, two full festival days, a separate camping area and shuttle transport now allow people to travel into Konstanz specifically for the event rather than simply walk over from lecture halls. AnnenMayKantereit, Kraftklub, Faber and Juju led the 2022 comeback. In 2023, Marteria, badmómzjay, BHZ, Von Wegen Lisbeth, Schmyt, Ski Aggu, makko and Paula Hartmann showed how firmly Campus Festival had entered the national festival circuit. The stadium and lake created a striking new setting, but they also sharpened an unavoidable question: how far could an event founded as a student initiative expand before its campus identity became primarily historical?

The next editions never entirely resolved that contradiction. In 2024, 01099, Jeremias, Pashanim, 102 Boyz, Juju and Nura formed part of an unusually deep programme. The 2025 weekend marked ten years since the festival’s creation with K.I.Z, $OHO BANI, Paula Hartmann, Berq, Culcha Candela and Blümchen. Newcomers, regional musicians and electronic artists still received dedicated space, keeping some of the discovery culture of the early years alive. Yet the economic and artistic scale was clearly different from 2015. Campus Festival had become capable of competing for acts across the German summer market while still drawing on students, volunteers and university associations for part of its history and personality.

May 29–30, 2026 made that transformation especially visible. More than 22,000 people attended a weekend led by Sean Paul, Ski Aggu and Giant Rooks. Sean Paul provided the kind of international headline booking the first Parkplatz Nord gathering could hardly have imagined, while Zartmann, Ikkimel, BIBIZA, Blond, makko, Souly and Ritter Lean kept the festival closely connected to current German-speaking pop and rap. The camping area was being redesigned more deliberately, transport systems were expanded and the Bodenseestadion operated less like a temporary solution than an established home. Campus Festival was no longer simply a large university project; it had become one of Konstanz’s major cultural events.

Then came a quieter but historically significant change. In July 2026, Campus Festival Konstanz gGmbH ended its formal cooperation agreement with the Universität Konstanz student representation. The StuVe publicly argued that the event had moved away from its original student roots and said it would no longer participate in the same way from 2027. The festival itself remains active, although no official date for the next edition has yet been published. The split does not erase the history, but it opens a new chapter. “Campus” will remain above the gates at Bodenseestadion; what the word means from now on may be less obvious. From 2,300 people on a university parking lot to Sean Paul playing before a stadium-scale crowd, Campus Festival Konstanz has always been a story about growth. Its next challenge is deciding which parts of its beginning still need to grow with it.
