Closer to the Sun

At Closer to the Sun, the usual distance between performer and audience can almost disappear. An artist who headlines the courtyard at night might be near the pool the following afternoon, turn up unannounced during somebody else’s set or take part in an activity only a few metres from fans who watched them perform hours earlier. That proximity was built into the event from the beginning. There is no enormous field surrounded by distant campsites and no temporary city requiring long walks between stages. Instead, there is a Caribbean resort, four nights of music and a relatively contained community sharing restaurants, pools, beaches and concert spaces from mid-afternoon until well after midnight.

Slightly Stoopid launched Closer to the Sun with Cloud 9 Adventures in 2014 at the Now Sapphire Resort in Puerto Morelos. The most revealing decision was not the lineup but the size. Although the band was already capable of playing to much larger crowds, attendance was deliberately kept below one thousand. Citizen Cope, Dirty Heads, Steel Pulse and G. Love & Special Sauce joined the hosts, with Don Carlos, Karl Denson, Ian Neville and Ethan Tucker appearing as special guests. Slightly Stoopid played multiple times, including an acoustic performance. The event was conceived less as another date on the festival circuit than as an extended gathering where musicians and listeners would remain in the same environment for several days.

Repeated performances quickly became one of its defining characteristics. Many artists play twice, while Slightly Stoopid traditionally delivers three different shows. That creates room for changing setlists, collaborations and improvised appearances that a conventional fly-in, fly-out festival rarely encourages. Musicians such as Karl Denson, Don Carlos, G. Love and Chali 2na gradually became part of an extended Closer family, appearing inside one another’s performances rather than remaining isolated behind individual billing slots. Fans learn that seeing a band on the first night does not make its second appearance redundant. The possibility that another musician will walk onstage or that the mood will shift completely is part of the reason people return.

For four editions, Now Sapphire and Puerto Morelos defined that community. SOJA, Iration, Pepper and Ozomatli joined in 2015; Dirty Heads, Matisyahu, Tribal Seeds and Stick Figure followed in 2016; SOJA, Stick Figure, J Boog and Fortunate Youth appeared in 2017. Reggae was clearly the centre of gravity, but the festival inherited Slightly Stoopid’s refusal to stay inside one category. Rock, dub, funk, hip hop and jam culture all flowed around the reggae foundation. A roots veteran could be followed by a California reggae-rock band, a rapper or a funk-heavy guest musician without the programme feeling incoherent. The shared language was less genre purity than the West Coast culture surrounding the host band.

The largest physical change came in 2018, when Closer to the Sun moved south to Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya near Puerto Aventuras. The new home provided considerably more infrastructure while preserving the all-inclusive resort model. A beach-oriented stage handles afternoon and sunset performances, the central Concert Courtyard becomes the main evening arena and late-night spaces keep music running long after the largest sets finish. Pools can become listening areas rather than places to escape from the festival. Restaurants, bars and food are included in packages, while accommodation sits only minutes from the music. There is no need to commute back to a hotel or return to a tent in the dark; the hotel itself has effectively become the festival grounds.

That arrangement changes the tempo of the entire day. Afternoon music can begin while people are still in swimwear, followed by a sunset set beside the Caribbean. There is time to return to a room before the main courtyard fills, and after the evening headliner the crowd can move towards DJ sets or more intimate late-night performances. Yoga, basketball, artist activities, excursions and community projects through Positive Legacy occupy hours that might otherwise be empty. Closer to the Sun consequently feels less like a lineup stretched over four days than a holiday temporarily inhabited by one musical scene. Guests are not merely buying admission to performances; they are booking themselves into an environment where almost everyone else has travelled for the same bands.

Covid interrupted that continuity after the sixth edition in 2019, which had featured Dirty Heads, Stephen Marley, Stick Figure, SOJA, Toots & The Maytals, Tribal Seeds and Don Carlos. The event returned in December 2021 with Rebelution, Stephen Marley, Cypress Hill, Iration, Pepper, Common Kings, HIRIE and The Movement surrounding three Slightly Stoopid performances. The following years widened the edges even further. 311 and Method Man & Redman came in 2022; 2023 featured Dirty Heads, Steel Pulse and a Beastie Boys tribute involving Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe and members of Slightly Stoopid; the tenth anniversary in 2024 brought Stick Figure, Sublime, Cypress Hill and Iration.

The eleventh edition shifted from the familiar December period into January 2026. Rebelution, Dirty Heads, Pepper, The Movement, The Elovaters, HIRIE, DENM, Little Stranger and Rome joined the hosts, while Damian and Stephen Marley delivered a special collaborative performance. The next gathering is already set for January 9–13, 2027, with Stick Figure, Wiz Khalifa, Iration, SOJA, Tribal Seeds, Little Stranger, Lila Iké and a range of DJ and poolside appearances surrounding Slightly Stoopid’s three shows. It has already sold out and moved to a waitlist. More than a decade into its life, Closer to the Sun still succeeds by refusing the most obvious ambition in festival culture. It does not try to place more people farther from the stage; it treats intimacy itself as the luxury.
